I started school in Ray North Dakota. It was my first day of first grade. Away from home..strange town, strange school..my Dad was part of a road construction crew. We were in North Dakota just for the summer..but apparently we stayed into the school year.
That is me and my baby brother. It was not his first day of school..I am not quite sure why he was in the picture..probably just because he was cute. We are standing just outside the door of that wicked trailer house. It had an improper ground and if you touched the sides of the door as you went in you got a shock. I hated getting that shock.
Here we are arriving at school in a 1955 Chevy. I think it was green.

I am not sure of the little boy in front..he must belong to Doris..but I cannot remember his name. This was another family who was out on “the road” for the summer. All the kids played together…jacks and marbles being my favorite. ( I wonder what happened to these kids? )
It must have been a cool morning since we all have jackets on. I remember nothing of the school day..other than I was scared because I knew no one. I remember these photos being taken and some others from that time..but school..nope no memories of a teacher or anything.
What do you remember if anything about your first day of first grade?
I remember being very scared and not knowing anyone too. I didn’t want my mom to leave me there. Our teacher had long painted fingernails, a bit out of place in our farming community. She would sometimes pinch the naughty kids
They were building a highline through the county so we had lots of extra kids in grades one and two. After that we were a small class and graduated only 23 of us. We have lost 7 classmates in school and after so we are only 18 of us now. I think it’s time for us to get together again!
As long ago as it was for both of us I to remember the first day of school. In the one picture you mentioned Doris Kaatz. Do you have any more information about her. I am wondering if a relative of sorts. Good Memories…………………….

I have a picture of my first grade entrance…..I was wearing a tan jumper my Mom had sewed (she sewed all my school clothes) that had a colorful trim sewn to it. In the picture I am standing by the neighbor’s flower garden which Mom used as a background for the first day of school pictures. My hair is tightly curled from metal curlers overnight and I have a big ribbon bow on top of some braids that she fashioned above the curls. I remember Miss Mickelson and all the kids in my class. I was an older 6 year old so I was not scared and eager to get on with my education..I dedsperately wanted to be able to read to myself. There is also a picture with my neighbor Byron who was going into 2nd grade ; I probably walked to school with him showing me the ropes at the school!! Our other friend is standing with us also but he was too young to go with us..he looks so lonely knowing that his playmates are leaving him behind that day.
